Using flow meters in the manufacture of food and beverages
Food and beverage manufacturing facilities across the UK and Europe need to monitor the flow measurements of ingredients at almost every stage of individual production processes. There will also be a need to monitor the flow of other elements being used during the manufacturing process, such as water, gas and oil. These too will of course also require flow measurement. This is where clever flow meter technology comes into play.
If you have never heard of a flow meter then it probably best to give you a quick explanation. Flow meters are very sophisticated instruments that are able to measure the linear, nonlinear, mass or volumetric flow rates of a liquid or gas. There are many different types of flow meter systems on the market today. The flow meter device chosen to use will naturally be dictated by a series of important factors. These include what type of liquid or gas needs to be monitored and whether this liquid or gas is toxic or hazardous. Also the pressure and temperature of the liquid or gas is very important, as is what kind of flow measurements will need to be collected.
Flow meters can be invasive or non-invasive. That means some devices can be installed within the pipe that the liquid or gas flows through (invasive), or be attached to the outside of the pipe (non-invasive). Again, whether the flow meter is installed within a pipe, or sited on the pipes surface will depend on a whole range of factors concerning the liquid or gas passing through the tube. For this article we will taking a closer look at flow meters that work on the outside of the pipe that do not need to be inserted into the pipe. These flow meters are ultrasonic and can easily monitor a whole range of information about the gas or liquid flowing through the pipe from outside the pipe.
Let us have a look at just one ingredient used in the food and drink industry, water. In food and drink manufacturing one of the most important commodities is a clean supply of fresh water. Hot and cold water, so essential in a number of processes is now an expensive product which requires constant metering. This is where ultrasonic flow meter technology can assist. Ultrasonic flow meters can be applied to measure and record data across the manufacturing process including water consumption/loss, water temperatures, boiler/chiller evaluation and pump evaluations.
One major advantage of using ultrasonic flow meter devices is that they are non-invasive. There is no need to have access points cut into pipework as the technology simply sits on the pipes exterior surface. Engineers can also take advantage of totally portable ultrasonic flowmeters that can be taken around a processing plant and used for a variety of tasks.
If you perhaps would like to find out more about this exciting technology and how ultrasonic flow meters are used in the food and drink industry then why not pay a visit to the website for Katronic. Katronic have been established since 1996 are have become highly specialised manufacturers and suppliers of ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters and contactless level measurement equipment. On the website you will be able to discover how this technology is being used not only in the food and drink industry, but across a whole range of industries in a wide range of applications.
